Tinnitus

How the VA Rates Tinnitus (38 CFR § 4.87, DC 6260)

The VA assigns a single disability rating for recurrent tinnitus under Diagnostic Code 6260. Tinnitus is defined as the perception of sound (such as ringing, buzzing, hissing, or roaring) in the absence of an external source. If the condition is service-connected and recurrent, the VA assigns a maximum 10% rating, regardless of whether the sound is heard in one ear, both ears, or in the head. The VA does not assign separate ratings for each ear. Because 10% is the highest schedular rating available for tinnitus, veterans seeking higher compensation must show additional service-connected conditions or pursue extra schedular consideration if symptoms create exceptional impairment.
